NZ Fly Fishing Expeditions - late season Brown trout

NZ Fly Fishing Expeditions - late season Brown trout

I’ve been busy shooting ducks over the last week and have a bit of success so the freezer is filling up slowly. We are having a wild game dinner with some friends in the weekend and on the menu is Mallard duck, Paradise duck, rabbit back steaks, hare back steaks, paua, trout and blue cod so it should be quite the feast.

I had a friend fishing on backcountry river “X” yesterday in bewteen the nasty cold wintery fronts that are blasting us at the moment. He had some good fishing with a bunch of brown trout to the nbank between 2 -4 lbs in size and finished the day with a nice 9lb brown trout. There has certainly been a good run of brown trout going up these systems in preparation for spawning so there is some very good May fishing to be had.

The stream mouths have also been offering some good sport with both brown and rainbow trout waiting off the lips and some quinnet salmon also being reported.

If there is a break in the weather next week I am going to pop around to some of the streams in the Te Anau area that stay open until the end of the month that are also fishing well with brown trout running.
